Jillian Schwedler is Assistant Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Middle East Research and Information Project, publishers of the quarterly Middle East Report.

She is author of Faith in Moderation: Islamist Parties in Jordan and Yemen (Cambridge, 2006) and numerous articles that have appeared in Comparative Politics, Journal of Democracy Social Movement Studies, and SAIS Review of International Affairs, among others. She is also editor of three volumes on Middle East politics, including the award-winning Understanding the Contemporary Middle East (with Deborah J. Gerner; Lynne Rienner, 2004).

Schwedler has received grants and fellowships from the National Sciences Foundation, the Fulbright Scholars Program (twice), and the Social Science Research Council (twice), among others. She has traveled extensively in the Middle East and is currently working on a book project on the politics of political protests and policing in Jordan.
