Teaching/Research
Dr. Thompson has research and teaching interests in international relations, with particular emphasis on international organization, international political economy and international environmental politics. His book, Channeling Power: The UN Security Council and American Statecraft in Iraq, asks why powerful states often conduct coercive foreign policies through international organizations but sometimes operate alone.

Much of his research addresses issues of institutional variation and design at the international level, with specific projects focused on legalization in international trade, the design of the climate change regime, UN weapons inspections, and the politics of economic treaty ratification. He also writes and speaks on the question of unilateralism versus multilateralism in U.S. foreign policy.
