Christine Korsgaard is the Arthur Kingsley Porter professor of philosophy and the director of graduate studies in philosophy at Harvard University, where she has taught since 1991. Korsgaard’s work focuses on moral philosophy and its history, practical reason, the nature of agency, personal identity, normativity, and the ethical relations between human beings and the other animals.


Korsgaard has written a number of books including Self-Constitution: Agency, Identity, and Integrity (Oxford, 2009). This book is an expansion of her 2002 Locke Lectures and is about the foundation of morality in the nature of agency.  She also wrote The Constitution of Agency (Oxford, 2008), The Sources of Normativity (Cambridge, 1996), and Creating the Kingdom of Ends (Cambridge, 1996).  She is one of the editors of Reclaiming the History of Ethics:  Essays for John Rawls (Cambridge, 1997). 


Korsgaard has published articles in AV Magazine, The Harvard Review of Philosophy, Ethics, Ethics 109 and has contributed to numerous other publications.


In 1981, Korsgaard received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Harvard University. She graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with her B. A. summa cum laude, in Philosophy (1974).  From July 1996 through June 2002, she was the Chair of the Department of Philosophy at Harvard University. Prior to her time at Harvard, she held positions at Yale, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and the University of Chicago, as well as visiting positions at Berkeley and UCLA.
