This Mershon Monday has been moved to Derby Hall 1080 from Derby Hall 1039

Elites are usually seen primarily as political, economic, and financial actors. What picture do we get if we situate the global superrich also as socially networked, culturally entangled human beings? Do the particulars matter concerning, for example, their conspicuous consumption, ostentatious philanthropy, and claims of "effective altruism" or innovatively serving the common good? How do considerations of taste and aesthetic judgement (in Bourdieu’s sense) enable or modulate elite power? We will discuss examples from the U.S. (e.g. Trump), Central Asia, the Balkans and others. This presentation is meant to provoke a discussion in the Mershon community about why we should add cultural analyses to political economy in order to make sense of the movers and shakers of the world today.
About Mershon Monday
Mershon Mondays encourage Ohio State researchers in different disciplines, career stages, and professional networks to share ideas and perspectives on global security questions. A light lunch is served. Given a strong response in the fall, we're now requesting advance registration.
