Answering these questions is critical as countries face democratic backsliding, and authoritarian governments contest the value and promote alternative notions of democracy.Join the Mershon Center in welcoming, Jonathan Chu of the National University of Singapore as he discusses his recent six country experimental surveys comparing and contrasting democratic views in the United States, Italy, Egypt, India, Thailand, and Japan.Speaker Jonathan Chu is a Presidential Young Professor of International Affairs at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. His research shows how political norm, psychology, and identity affect the domestic politics of democracy and war. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Conflict Resolution, World Politics, Journal of Politics, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It has also received grant funding and other recognition from the U.S. National Science Foundation, International Studies Association (Finkelstein Paper Prize, International Organization), American Political Science Association (Weber Paper Prize, Religion and Politics), and other organizations.Jonathan Chu also consults and speaks on issues of international affairs, democracy, and survey methodology. His experience in research and academic leadership includes serving as the founding director of research at CivicPulse, lab manager of the Stanford Survey Lab, and chair of the Master in International Affairs (MIA) programme at the LKY School. He currently serves on the editorial board of International Studies Quarterly and Journal of Experimental Political Science.Jonathan Chu received a B.A. in political science from UC San Diego, and a Ph.D. also in political science from Stanford University.
