Grant applications now open for digitizing Non-State histories

The image features a darkened room with sunlight filtering through a window, casting soft light across a desk and scattered books. There appears to be a bookshelf in the background. The books on the desk are open, suggesting a space of study or research. A laptop is also visible, indicating a blend of traditional and modern means of information processing. Overlaying this scene is text that reads "The Non-State Archive" with a graphic element of a vertical teal line beside the text.

The Ohio State University's Mershon Center for International Security Studies announces the launch of the Non-State Archive. Lacking access to state archives and often to private funding, social movements and activist networks face challenges in preserving their records for the long term. The Non-State Archive provides a digital repository for copies of documents, oral histories, and media. Hosted offline at the Mershon Center, the Archive offers access and finding tools to approved researchers.

Ohio State PhD students and external researchers are invited to apply for funding to support the digitization and cataloguing of their non-state collections according to Non-State Archive practices. External researchers from any country may apply for grants of up to $10,000; Ohio State PhD students can apply for $6000 in summer funding.

Interested parties should contact Archive Director Lydia Walker at walker.1380@osu.edu to discuss potential collections. Applications can be submitted via email to MRSH-nonstatearchive@osu.edu. The call for funding is now open with a deadline of February 28, 2024.

Supported by The Ohio State University’s Provost’s Early Career Scholar’s Program and The Mershon Center for International Security Studies.
