Family members sorting through bones of the disappeared in Colombia

Contributors to Search

Exploring how people with firsthand knowledge of conflict - including former combatants, witnesses, and families who have searched for decades - may contribute to locating the missing, supporting truth recovery, and strengthening reconciliation processes.

Across the world, efforts to locate the disappeared increasingly depend on people who once occupied opposing sides of armed conflict, including former combatants, witnesses, and families who have searched for decades. The Search Lab examines how individuals with firsthand knowledge of violence contribute to locating the missing, supporting truth recovery, and shaping processes of recognition, accountability, and repair. Rather than treating contributors as a uniform category, the Lab explores how participation is shaped by different experiences of conflict and by the conditions under which knowledge of the missing is carried, protected, and shared.
