Ravi River
Ravi, known as Iravati and Parushni in the past has a total length of about 720 kms out of which 320 kms is in India. It originates at an altitude of about 4300 meters in the Himalayas, bounded by the two major ranges Pirpanjal and Dhualadhar. The river is dammed and tunneled in its headwaters for hydropower projects in India, designated as an 'eastern river' under the Indus Waters Treaty, before entering Pakistan. For more than 80 kilometers, the river is also the ‘border' between India and Pakistan and has been a silent witness to the tragedies of 1947 Partition, on-going political conflicts and the syncretism and unity that is still very much alive in the region.
