12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
1039 Derby Hall

Overview

In 2018, Sonja Niemeier and Tim Luecke from Cologne, Germany, embarked on a three-month road trip through the United States to ask people why they believe Trump was elected president. The question served as the primary hook to inquire into the nature of – what they call – the Crisis of the West. Among the fifty Americans interviewed for the book were four former graduate students of the Political Science Department at The Ohio State University, as well as Randall Schweller and Alexander Wendt. The book “The Crisis of the West – Part I: Why Trump?” was published in the fall of 2021.

During his presentation, Tim Luecke will talk about how the book changed the authors’ views about the crisis of American democracy and clarified their conception of the Crisis of the West as manifested on global, national, and local levels. He will also discuss why it inspired the authors to create the social-benefit company Transatlantika and how it provided the impetus for organizing a conference series on “The Future of the West,” involving think tanks, NGOs, and six universities on both sides of the Atlantic in 2023 and 2024.

After the event, a limited number of copies of the book “Why Trump?” will be available for sale and signed by the author. To order the book online, go to https://transatlantika.com/shop/

NOTE: This event will be held in person at 1039 Derby Hall.
