Rick has organized three related events (listed below), which all touch on the state of Russian affairs. Fellows are encouraged to join us for this virtual event.  March 2: Making Sense of the Ukraine Crisis March 24: Vladimir Putin in Comparative Perspective April 8: U.S. and NATO Relations with Russia and Security in Europe Conference   Moderators Richard Herrmann is Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of Political Science (emeritus) at the Ohio State University.  He was director of the Mershon Center from 2001-2011 and chair of the Department of Political Science from 2011-2019.  He is the author of numerous articles including “How attachments to the nation shape beliefs about the world: A theory of motivated reasoning,” International Organization, 2017, “Attachment to the Nation and International Relations: Probing the dimensions of identity and their relationship to war and peace,” Political Psychology, (2009), “Beliefs, Values and Strategic Choice:  U.S. Leaders’ Decisions to Engage, Contain and Use Force in an Era of Globalization,” Journal of Politics, (2004), and “Mass Public Decisions to Go to War: A Cognitive-Interactionist Framework” American Political Science Review (1999).  He also co-edited Ending the Cold War: Interpretations, Causation, and the Study of International Relations (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2004) and authored Perceptions and Behavior in Soviet Foreign Policy (University of Pittsburgh Press, 1985).   Scott Smitson is the inaugural Professor of Geostrategy, Geo-economic, and Transnational Affairs at United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and Joint Special Operations University.  He assumed this position after more than a 20-year career in the US Army.  Prior to retiring, he was the Chief of Strategy at United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) and prior to that a strategic advisor to the current Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin III, when Austin was the commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM).  While Scott was deployed in the Pentagon, he supported the creation of the Global Campaign Plan for Russia and China.  He is currently advising on the creation of the forthcoming 2022 National Defense Strategy. Scott has a PhD in political science from Indiana University, has taught at Georgetown and several other universities, and most important of all, is a Buckeye.   Zoom Mershon Center mershoncenter@osu.edu America/New_York public
