GAHDT Supported Series: ‘(Re)Imagining Archives After Empire: Cases from Africa’
Event 1 of 2: In the Shadow of Empire: Exploring the National Archives of Zimbabwe
This is the first of two seminars funded by the Global Arts + Humanities Discovery Theme highlighting the transformations, challenges, and opportunities which emerge from working in archives in (and on) recently decolonized African states.
The two speakers will share insights from their experiences working in the National Archives of Zimbabwe as a researcher and archivist, respectively. The seminar will reflect on the ways in which the legacies of colonialism continue to shape the National Archives of Zimbabwe and historical research on the country.
Cumulatively, this speaker series seeks to illuminate a pathway in which scholars and archivists can imaginatively pursue scholarship beyond the confines of imperial archives.

Speakers:
Chase Barney is a PhD candidate in the Department of History at the University of Arkansas. He has made several research trips to Zimbabwe. His dissertation examines the presence of black domestic workers in the segregated white suburbs of colonial Harare (Zimbabwe’s capital).
Lawrence Mukusha is a teaching assistant at Kent State University and a former Research Archivist at the National Archives of Zimbabwe.
