Helen Murphey received her PhD from the University of St Andrews in 2023, where she was a Carnegie Ph.D. Scholar. She previously held a post as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Politics at Whitman College. Her research focuses on the role of identity and ideology in politics, with a specialization in religious political parties in North Africa, populism, conspiracy theories and polarization. 

Her work has been published in Mediterranean Politics, the Journal of North African Studies, Feminist Media Studies and Oxford Middle East Review, among others. She is a Research Associate at the Institute of Middle East, Central Asia and Caucasus Studies at the University of St Andrews.
