Ph.D. Candidate, Political Science
Stephanie Pedron is a Political Science Ph.D. candidate concentrating in American Politics, Political Methodology, and Political Psychology. She is interested broadly in public opinion, race and identity politics, unorthodox political attitudes, and political behavior. Her dissertation examines how normalized out-group biases shape political attitudes and behavior by exploring three distinct cases related to interminority antipathy, voter fraud, and redpilling.
Pedron's Mershon supported research project is "Broadcasting Extreme Conservatism: Epiphanic Attitude Shifts among Minorities."
Project abstract:
I explore a form of radicalization called redpilling, which refers to the “moment of enlightenment” when alt-right members accept extreme conservatism. Extant work has focused on White Americans, despite some evidence pointing to minorities being susceptible (e.g., former Proud Boys Leader Henry “Enrique” Tarrio). I aim to understand how racial/ethnic minorities— whom extreme conservative ideation is typically against—might come to adopt these views by examining how these ideas are framed to appeal to them.
