The Iran Conflict: Impact and Consequences
The conflict with Iran continues, with significant consequences both on the ground in Iran and across the globe. This panel will consider the costs of the war in three vital areas: diplomatic and strategic; financial/economic; and human. Three expert speakers will offer brief assessments about the current situation, with a Q+A to follow.

Expert Speakers
An accomplished research scholar, Peter Hahn is an Arts & Sciences Distinguished Professor of History. He has published seven books on the history of American diplomacy in the Middle East, most recently Missions Accomplished? The United States and Iraq since World War I, as well as scores of articles, essays, and reviews. A second edition of his best-selling textbook, Crisis and Crossfire: The United States and the Middle East since 1945, was published in 2024. Professor Hahn has conducted research in the archives of the United States, Israel, Britain, and France; delivered scholarly papers and invited lectures in eleven countries; consulted with policymakers in the U.S. Departments of State, Defense, and Justice and with senior officers of the Ohio National Guard; and given interviews to the media on five continents.
Professor Hahn previously served as dean of Arts and Humanities in 2015-21 and as chair of the History Department in 2006-15. In 2002-15, he served as executive director of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR), a professional society of some 1,400 members residing in 44 countries. He was elected by the membership to be president of SHAFR in 2018. In 2010, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland appointed Professor Hahn to a five-year term on the State of Ohio’s War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission.
Mehrak Kamali is an Associate Professor of Teaching & Persian Language Program Coordinator and an experienced instructor. He teaches courses in Iranian society today, Persian literature in translation, Iranian culture, and Persian language in different academic levels.
As a researcher, his research interest areas are pedagogy, language learning methods, sociology of modern Persian fiction, and the history of Iran. Mehrak has published several articles about language learning methods, modern Persian literature, and the history of Iran in Persian.
Mehrak has published several articles about modern Persian literature and the history of Iran in Persian. His last article, “Iranian Baha’i Community and Its Encounter with the Process of ‘Othering’ (1941-1983)” is a part of his ongoing project about position modifications of religious minorities and political groups in post-1979-revolutionary Iran. As a translator, he has translated Politics of Writings in Iran: A history of Modern Persian literature by Kamran Talattof into Persian which has been published in Iran by Namak publisher.
Daniel Ujczo is an international trade and transportation attorney that provides end-to-end counsel across Canada-U.S., North American and global supply chains. He is the Associate General Counsel at Cenovus Energy, one of the leading integrated energy providers from production, midstream and refining operations. He previously spent nearly a decade and a half in private practice leading a Canada-U.S. practice and was a member of international trade and transportation practice groups. Dan is the Honorary Consul of the Government of Canada to Ohio. For nearly a decade, Dan was a visiting professor of law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law and managed a lab that served as a legal adviser to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Dan was appointed by the US Secretary of Commerce to serve as a member of the District Export Council (DEC) for the Northern District of Ohio. Dan also was appointed by the Governor of Ohio as a Life Member of the Association of Ohio Commodores; he is the U.S. Vice President for the North American Strategy for Competitiveness (NASCO); and a board member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada (AMCHAM Canada). Dan is the President of the Ohio-Canada Business Association (Ohio-Can).
Dan holds a B.A. from The Ohio State University and a J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law.
