More than two dozen scholars from renowned institutions across the globe gathered for The Decline of the Liberal International Order workshop held March 21-22 at The Ohio State University (Ohio State). The workshop was co-sponsored by the Ohio State Department of Political Science and the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. 

The workshop was organized by three Ohio State affiliate faculty members, Sarah Brooks, Freddy Chen and Alex Thompson, along with Ricky Clark from the University of Notre Dame, Anna Meyerrose from Arizona State University, and Cleo O’Brien-Udry from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

“The world order as we know it is being challenged in profound ways,” said organizer Alex Thompson. “We were excited to bring together these world-class scholars to discuss these challenges and how they are shaping international relations and institutions in various domains.” 

Four workshop panels explored the politics of membership, exit, and authority in international organizations; democracy, identity, and the limits of IO influence; power, finance, and institutional strategy in the global economy; and narratives, norms, and backlash against globalization. The participants presented work in progress, with the goal of exchanging ideas and cutting-edge research. The organizers focused especially on giving junior scholars an opportunity to present their work and receive feedback from more senior colleagues.
